Common Canon printer issues

Detailed step-by-step solutions for Canon PIXMA, imageCLASS, and MAXIFY printers.

Faded output and streaks on Canon PIXMA printers are almost always caused by clogged printhead nozzles. The Canon maintenance tools can resolve this in most cases:

  1. 1Open Canon IJ Printer Utility (Mac) or Canon IJ Status Monitor (Windows). Navigate to Maintenance → Nozzle Check.
  2. 2Print the nozzle check pattern. If any rows show gaps or missing lines, the printhead needs cleaning.
  3. 3Run Cleaning (not Deep Cleaning first). Print another nozzle check pattern.
  4. 4If gaps remain, run Deep Cleaning. Note: this uses significant ink — only run once or twice.
  5. 5After cleaning, run Print Head Alignment from the same Maintenance menu.
  6. 6If streaks persist after 2 deep cleaning cycles, the printhead may need replacement (part number varies by model — check Canon's support site).
